Week of August 7-11

Welcome back everyone! I am excited to begin a new year in a new grade! I know the next few weeks will be pretty busy as we all get back into the swing of things. As a school, we have many events on the calendar! As of now, please keep the following dates in mind:

2nd Grade Open House- Tuesday, August 15th 5:30-6:30 p.m. in our classroom (Room 515)
Solar Eclipse Watch Party- Monday, August 21st 1:00 p.m. (Permission Slips are due 8/11)
**Glasses are being provided by Drug Free Tipton**

This week we will be focusing on learning classroom and school routines and expectations. As a part of our new county-wide discipline plan, students will be taught expectations for every aspect of the day- arrival, hallways, bathrooms, recess, lunch, and dismissal.

What We're Learning This Week:

Writing- To connect with our luau back to school theme, we will be researching the state of Hawaii. Students will work together to gather facts about Hawaii to create a travel brochure. Look for these at Open House!
Reading- We will be reading "Junie B. Jones Aloha-ha-ha" aloud as a class. Each day we will read 1-2 chapters. Students will be working on various comprehension skills with the read aloud. At the end of the week, we will take our first A.R. test of the year over "Junie B. Jones Aloha-ha-ha".

Math- Students will be reviewing math skills from 1st grade. We will also make "Math About Me" posters. Look for these at Open House!

Science/Social Studies- This week we will begin exploring our community. Students will learn about their place in the world with a "Me on the Map" activity.

Homework- Students will be bringing home a note on Monday about homework for this week. We will be making an "All About Me" backpack. Students should bring in 2-3 small objects to share about themselves. Items should be brought in by Wednesday, August 9th.

Your child will bring home their "Home Binder" beginning Monday. As agendas are purchased, I will begin recording your child's daily conduct grade in the weekly layout pages. Please review your child's conduct grade and sign. I will also be placing any additional papers from the office inside of the Home Binder.
